Welcome to my online work portfolio
Here, you can learn a little about me and peruse my work. I’ve embedded on this site using the wonderful technology of Issuu, so you can browe through my articles just as if you were flipping through the original magazines in which the works were published!.
I’m John Rumler, a freelance writer living and working in Portland, Oregon. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers, including The Oregonian, Oregon Business and Construction Magazine, and am always looking for a challenge. I love to write feature articles about business leaders, emerging industry trends and always enjoy traditional investigative journalism opportunities.
Before embarking on a writing career, I worked in the nation’s heartland at more than a dozen jobs, including a stints at a meat packing plant, as a railroad laborer, metal tender, hotel desk clerk, allied health technician, and job placement specialist. Over the last decade my writing career is proving equally diverse with over 500 articles for Portland area publications written; including Oregon Business Magazine, The Portland Business Journal, The Oregonian, Willamette Week, and The Daily Journal of Commerce. I’ve also written for national publications ranging from ASIANWEEK to The Wall Street Journal. Primarily a business writer, John also covers environmental, spiritual, and cultural issues for a wide range of newspapers and magazines, some community based and others in San Francisco, Seattle, and London.
I’ve reporting on wide ranging subjects-from the $20 million overhaul of Howard Hughes’ old ship, the Glomar Explorer, to the Enola Hill controversy on Mt. Hood National Forest, to a scathing expose on the state’s lottery system—keeps John challenged and stimulated.
“I love not knowing what story is around the next bend. That adventure and sense of discovery is what makes journalism so attractive and exciting to me.”
I live with my wife, Yae Sook, in Southeast Portland near Mt. Tabor Park with our two Labradors, Buddy and Sue.
